Pakistan Flood Devastation worse than Tsunami:
According to assessments so far, about 20 million people have been affected, 1,600 people killed, 300,000 homes have been destroyed and 2.6m acres (105,000 sq km) of croplands submerged. The figures are expected to climb in the coming days. It is by far the worst humanitarian crisis, still in the making as the displaced people are still waiting for aid, specially food and medicines to reach them but blocked access routes, collapsed bridges, lack of dry land to erect tents, lack of clean drinking water and sanitation facilities and shortage of relief supplies are hampering the relief efforts.Around 36,000 cases of diarrhea have so far been reported across the flood affected areas. the scale of destruction from monsoon flooding surpassed the devastation from the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami, the 2005 northern Pakistan earthquake, and the 2010 Haiti earthquake combined. Will the political eminences stop their fun fair with the people's flood catastrophe and get serious? This is the cruelest calamity to befall the nation in living memory. The people's grief is real, grave and colossal. It just admits of no politicking. Yet if the world community is lukewarm to our people's painful predicament, our own political grandees are just playing politics with it. Nobody out there in the world is making a beeline to come to our flood-stricken people's rescue. If foreign governments are tardy in their response, their publics too are showing no particular compassion. And the international relief workers are perplexed. Never ever have they encountered such a world disinterest in a people in distress. They are baffled at this international apathy, stumbling on plausible explanation. Surely, the country's ruling leadership has an image problem. But if it is for trust deficit, as some political and intellectual strands here would have it, the world community could have funnelled their aid through international relief agencies. It has not. The UN had appealed for $460 million for immediate relief. Not even one-quarter has come in. And whatever has been proffered is only in pledges. And one knows not when those will materialise, if at all. Our disappointing experience with aid pledges of Friends of Pakistan should be a telling indicator. Yet our political grandees are clownishly holding a bustling bazaar on this visible world stringiness.Foreign minister Shah Mehmood Qureshi talks exuberantly that the UN is going to hold a special meeting shortly to express solidarity with the flood-devastated people. What? For heaven's sake, do they need expression of solidarity or immediate relief and succour? And he says he has asked the OIC secretary general to convene an extraordinary OIC session to consider our flood situation. What is this bunk talk? Do we need an extraordinary session or instant relief assistance from this Muslim fraternity which has exhibited such a stunning indifference to our stricken people's doleful plight? And what kind of a churlish directive is this of the president to take steps to prevent epidemics in the flood-affected areas? Is it a directive or a firmed plan and action on it that are immediately called for?

Why not organise 'Comic Relief' and telethons for Pakistan floods victims? Please ensure the money goes to UK/US/EU registered charities/NGOs only, and not go to any politician. There is also an urgent need to write-off all IMF and bank loans burdens on Pakistan.
